We’re taking some time off this week to spend with friends and family, and reflect on all the things we’re thankful for (we hope you will too).  Specifically, Cut2SizeMetals.com will be closed Thursday November 24th and Friday November 25th.  That means, though, if you have an order you want shipped this week, we need to receive it by noon central time on Wednesday November 23rd.  If it is a little later than that, call us at 812.429.1634 and we will do what we can to ship on Wednesday.

For orders between Wednesday afternoon and Monday morning, these will ship out on the next business day we are open, which is Monday November 28th. Thanks to all our customers for your business, and Happy Thanksgiving to all!

We have lots of labor going on at Cut2SizeMetals.com, both in our aluminum, stainless steel, brass and copper sales and our custom fabrication. The best way to celebrate all that hard work is with a day off, so we’re taking Monday off, and hope you will, too. We also remember the labor of our founder, H. Byron Hubbard, shown here in what is probably the late ’30′s or early 40′s.

If you need materials from us to ship before the holiday, we need your order no later than noon on Friday September 2nd. Orders received after that will ship on Tuesday September 6th at the earliest.  Of course, if you want something delivered before the weekend, you need to be ordering NOW.  Specifically, we need your order by noon on Thursday September 1st, and it will have to go overnight shipping, if you want it before the weekend.  Give us a call at 812-429-1634 if you have questions.

Cut2SizeMetals will be featured in the first two episodes of the new home improvement show The Man Card Crew.  In these episodes, Host Jesse Nunez coordinates various contractors to transform an ordinary garage into the ultimate “man cave” poker room.  In this project they use aluminum tread plate (also known as diamond plate or checker plate) as wainscoting around the size of the garage supplied by Cut2SizeMetals.com.  Click the photos to see the final product.

Thank you to everyone who has called, written, and emailed about how easy our site is to use.  Our team spent lots of time thinking about it and fine-tuning it, and we truly appreciate knowing it is helpful to you.  This week we’ve added some new features to Cut2SizeMetals.com to make the site even easier to use for new and returning customers.  So without further ado, here are the new features and how to use them.

The Shipping Calculator is now on the cart page

We know that when you have a mix of pieces cut to size, it helps to know the total price even before you get to the address page.  That’s why we’ve eliminated the shipping page altogether, and added that functionality to the cart.  It saves a step, and ensures that you know what your order will cost before you proceed.

User Accounts

You may notice there are a couple of new buttons in the cart box on the top right of each page.  New customers can create an account by clicking “Sign Up” and returning customers can Log In here as well. An even easier way is to create an account when you order by entering a password at the bottom of the address & payment page (see the picture below). From then on, you can log in with your email address and the password you just entered.

Tax-Exempt Customers

Some of our customers would like their purchases to be tax-exempt, and we can now accomodate that through our user accounts.  Just follow these easy steps, and you’ll be all set up.

1. Sign up for a user account if you haven’t already.
2. Email or fax (812) 423-7353 your tax-exempt certificate to Denise (dvowels@esmw.com)
3. We will flag your account as tax-exempt for future orders.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, we had the opportunity to visit Louisville’s 21c Museum, billed as “North America’s only museum devoted solely to art of the 21st century.” In addition to the interactive exhibitions, concerts, film screenings, and many other activities there, we snapped a few shots of pieces that intrigued us.

Elastic Empire State

The first picture is an aluminum sculpture by Alex Arrechea called Elastic Empire State, which was commissioned by the museum in 2011 and is one of a series of rolled building sculptures. They are intended as a satirical depiction of the “fluctuations in economics through the metaphor of modified architecture.” (I’m still waiting for that sharp economic upturn indicated by the spire of the building).

American Appeal Bridge

Next, artist Yoan Capote uses paint, fish hooks, and nails to create American Appeal (Bridge).  Everything in the picture that is black is a hook, resulting in what must be thousands of metal fish hooks on the canvas.

The final picture is a three-dimensional “tornado” of metal objects, suspended in space a two-story atrium. [Update: Thanks to a friend of the Cut2Size Angle, we now know this piece is Anne Peabody's Wheel of Fortune.  Peabody's arresting sculpture is made from carved wooden items like broken eggs and flashlights, and combined with found bits of glass to form a massive funnel cloud reminiscent of the one that leveled much of Louisville over 30 years ago.]

We didn’t see any artist information, but if someone knows, please post a comment and we will update this post. There were a number of other exhibits that were really hands-on and appropriate for kids, and a boutique hotel and celebrated restaurant called Proof attached if you want to make a day of it.

A short video of our 4400 watt laser flying through titanium. You can see lots of videos of rapid laser cutting in steel, but even when the material costs thousands of dollars, we can still cut this fast!

[Editor's Note:  I asked Todd McGehee to give us a wrap up of the Ryan's season as a Junior Drag Racer.   Below are his comments.  -- Andy]

We are very proud to have been able to share our first year of Junior Drag Racing  with Cut2Sizemetals.com! Although our racing season has now come to a close, we have many memories of the past summer to carry us through the long cold winter!! This has been a racing season like no other for me! For the first time in 17 years, I never made a pass down the track in my car, but instead was able to be the proud father standing behind my son’s car watching him go down the track, much as my father did when I started racing.  It is truly a feeling like no other!! And, although I’ve butted my head against the wall many times trying to figure out how to tune one of these contrary one cylinder methanol burning ”beasts”, I couldn’t be prouder of the results!! We raced at 4 different tracks in Indiana and Kentucky with Ryan bringing home 6 trophies  for semi-finalist or better, including a win, which we had been told was next to impossible in the beginners 12.90 class. I can’t say enough for the group of kids and their families that race in the NHRA Junior Drag Racing League!! I think the most important thing that Ryan gained this season, were the friends he has made! We’d like to thank our friends and Cut2SizeMetals.com customers, Mat Wright’s BRC Racecrafts and Chris Gish for helping us put Ryan’s car together. Also, Lisa and Jon Spindler at IYF Graphics.com and Dragtopia.com for the awesome vinyl wrap on Ryan’s car and the photos taken to remember our first season!

We often get to work with artists here at Cut2SizeMetals.com, and it is an exciting challenge.  A number of our projects have involved aluminum plate and stainless steel plate; you can see them here and here.  Like the POD sculpture in Portland,  here is another piece we ran across in our travels.

This bronze lady is seated in front of the Institut Hongrois de Paris (Hungarian Institute of Paris),  and was sculptured by Hungary’s own Andras Lapis.  Although not on a major thoroughfare, we were surprised how many others have stumbled across it while visiting Paris.  It is known as Sous le Chapeau, or Under the Hat, and we had to be quite close before we realized it wasn’t an actual woman,  so painstakingly was it sculpted.  Enjoy!

Ryan in Cut2SizeMetals.com Dragster

Well, we raced at US 60 dragway in Hardinsburg, Ky on Friday night and Ryan got another semifinals trophy. He certainly drew a lot of attention! It was a late night with the frist round of eliminations starting at 8:00 pm and we didn’t get home until 1:30 this morning. The new motor ran like a charm and the driver was on his game too! It’s nice to be back in the groove like we were earlier this summer!
